IGBO PEOPLE, NIGERIA. MID-20TH CENTURY

History:

The ten million Igbo of Southeastern Nigeria have a prehistory dating back to the 10th century. Their archetypal and well known white-faced "Maiden-Forest Spirit" mask is a direct antithesis to this extremely rare mask's darker personification. Perhaps both masks were danced together as aspects of light and dark in the primeval forest. Worn on the top of the head, the "Spider Tendrils" of the attached horns would move during the dance, giving the impression of a fearful and powerful "Spider Spirit"....
